Does God speak to people today? Can we really hear from Him?
I believe the heart of every true believer is to be able to hear from God and know that He’s the One speaking. But, how does that happen and can it really happen?
Let’s go to the Word and see what God has to say about the subject. We are told to heed His voice, walk in His ways, and do His works by doing His Word. Now, just how can we do this if we can’t hear from Him? Well, we can hear and it’s not all that hard. God never requires us to do something that we can’t do.
The Holy Spirit indwells us and witnesses truth to our spirit. For example, if you declare, “I’m saved by the Blood of Jesus,” you’ll notice the witness (a sensing) in your spirit acknowledging that this is true. It’s a knowing and a peace in your spirit that this is true. This is one way we hear.
Another way is the peace factor. An example would be when you’re trying to make a decision about something. Which option do you have peace about in your spirit? Which one indicates a scratchiness? If you’re really sincere about hearing from the Lord, you’ll be able to trust that peace. But if you’re determined to “have it your way,” you won’t get a true reading.
Then there are the times when, after you’ve prayed about something, you go about your business and then, like out of nowhere you get a thought or an idea about what to do about your situation. Actually, it doesn’t come out of nowhere. It comes out of your spirit and that’s when we say, “This Lord told me…”
Can we ever going to be absolutely positive that what we’re hearing is from the Lord? Maybe, maybe not. It depends. Many times I have found that when I step out on what I’ve heard, that’s when I get confirmation that I really did hear. But even if we make a mistake, God can realign us. Course corrections are always happening. This walk of faith with the Lord is not without winding roads!
When the Space Shuttle first went up, the astronauts made course corrections every ten minutes. And even though they had a 500 mile landing strip, they landed just inside 5 feet of the 500 mile strip!
Nothing is a straight path because we live in a world that is under the curse and we have an enemy who’s out to steal, kill, and destroy us. But the good news is that God has given us weapons to overcome the devil and his evil plans against us. Praise the Lord of glory! Remember, God goes before us and makes the crooked places straight.
We need to set our faces like flint, keep our eyes on Jesus, and hear from the Holy Spirit as He leads and guides us into all truth. It’s such a comfort knowing that we have answers to whatever the situation.
God is faithful, faithful, faithful!
John 10:10 (KJV) 10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
2 Corinthians 10:4 (KJV) 4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
Ephesians 6:10-11 (KJV) 10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
Luke 6:47-48 (KJV) 47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:
48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.
John 2:5 (KJV) 5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
2 Corinthians 5:7 (KJV) 7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
Isaiah 45:2 (KJV) 2 I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron:
John 16:13 (KJV) 13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
