Every Christian has heard of eternal life and that getting saved gives it to you, right? But really, what exactly is eternal life? As usual, we’ll go to God’s Word to find out since eternal life comes from Him.
If you ask many Christians, they’ll probably say that eternal life is living forever with God in Heaven. Yes, this is true but there’s so much more.
John 17:3 (KJV) 3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
1 John 5:20 (KJV) 20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
As you can see, according to the above scriptures, eternal life means knowing God the Father and Jesus Christ His Son. But what we want to know is how we get it.
We get eternal life the moment we’re born again- not when we go to Heaven. If you’re born-again, you’re in eternal life right now and to the degree that you know God and the Lord Jesus, that’s the degree to which you can enjoy this rich God-like life.
Eternal means: everlasting, immortal, perpetual, ceaseless
Know means: to know absolutely, perceive, understand
Yes, this is what we have now and we’ll have it forever and ever throughout all eternity. The immortal part is that we’ll live forever with the Lord. Even though your physical body dies, your spirit – the real you – will live forever with the Lord. We can actually have a taste of Heaven on earth while we’re here! And we’ll get our glorified bodies later.
Eternal life is more than just living forever. It’s living the victorious life that God has for you right now on planet earth. We are to know our Father God love Him with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind. Just thinking about that this me know that it’ll take all eternity to really know God!
God has so much for us and He’s provided all that we’ll ever need while we’re on planet earth. He wants us to have Heaven on earth!

Luke 10:25-27 (KJV) 25 And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
26 He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?
27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.
2 Peter 1:3-4 (KJV)
3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
